Home Safety Checklist for Seniors

One in four adults over 65 experiences a fall each year, and most happen inside the home. A quick walkthrough with a safety checklist can identify small changes that dramatically reduce risk — so aging in place stays possible for longer.

Entryways & Hallways

  • Install handrails on both sides of stairs
  • Keep pathways clear of clutter, cords, and loose rugs
  • Add motion-activated lighting for nighttime navigation
  • Ensure doorways are wide enough for a walker or wheelchair

Bathroom

  • Install grab bars beside the toilet and inside the shower
  • Use a non-slip bath mat and a shower chair if needed
  • Set the water heater to 120°F to prevent scalding
  • Consider a raised toilet seat for easier transfers

Kitchen

  • Store frequently used items between waist and shoulder height
  • Replace glass items with lightweight, unbreakable alternatives
  • Add a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher within easy reach
  • Consider an automatic stove shut-off device

Bedroom & Living Areas

  • Place a lamp and phone within arm's reach of the bed
  • Use nightlights between bedroom and bathroom
  • Ensure furniture is stable and doesn't wobble when leaned on
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts visible near the phone
